Salamanca-Matacán airport or Barajas: which airport suits each flight from each part of the province

The short answer is Barajas. Salamanca-Matacán airport, east of the capital and shared with an air base, has a very small, seasonal scheduled offer, so it serves only those who find exactly their destination on its calendar; everyone else flies from Madrid-Barajas, 230 km and about 166 min from Salamanca, from 284,25 € per car. Matacán is 22 km from the city, and for the north of the province Valladolid can work for some destinations. With a first-thing flight at Barajas no train arrives in time from Salamanca, and from Béjar or Ciudad Rodrigo the pickup is in the small hours.

What flies from Salamanca-Matacán airport, and who is it for?

Matacán is an Aena airport east of Salamanca, on the road towards Peñaranda and Ávila, sharing its runway and facilities with the air base of the same name. Its civil traffic is small: the province page describes it as an airport with very little scheduled service, varying by season, and that description is still the right one. What there is tends to be a summer connection or holiday-date service, plus charter and general aviation, and it changes from one year to the next, so the only reliable thing is to check the schedule on the airport's page before counting on it.

When the flight exists, Matacán is a huge advantage: it is a short hop from the centre of Salamanca, about 41 min by car, the terminal is small and there are no big-airport queues or distances. From Béjar it is 89 km and from Ciudad Rodrigo 109 km, far but much less than Barajas. There is no public transport timed to the flights, so getting to Matacán is by your own car, taxi or a transfer with a driver, and parking is rarely a problem; the transfer makes sense above all for anyone coming from the province or for anyone who does not want to leave the car for several days.

Why does almost everyone fly from Barajas?

Because that is where the flights are. Barajas concentrates the domestic, European and intercontinental connections that a province like Salamanca cannot sustain on its own, and it lies a little over two hundred kilometres from the capital along the A-50, the AP-51 and the AP-6. For the University of Salamanca it is the arrival airport for students from outside Spain; for the companies of Guijuelo and the industrial estates of Villares de la Reina and Carbajosa, the airport for business trips; and for families, the holiday airport. From Béjar it is 231 km, from Ciudad Rodrigo 317 km, and Guijuelo lies between Béjar and the capital, with its own route page.

The problem with Barajas is not the distance but the hour. The train from Salamanca reaches Chamartín, not the airport, and then needs the Cercanías or the metro with the luggage; for a flight leaving early in the morning no service arrives in time, and a flight landing at night leaves the traveller in Madrid with no train back until the next day. The coach has the same limit. That is why a transfer with a driver is, for early flights and late returns, the missing piece: it collects at home at the time check-in dictates, drops at the terminal door and, on the way back, waits in arrivals with the flight number.

When does Valladolid come in, and what about Porto for the west?

Valladolid airport, at Villanubla, has more scheduled flights than Matacán, with domestic and some European connections that change by season, and it lies on the way of the A-62 via Tordesillas. For the city of Salamanca it rarely beats Barajas unless the destination matches, because the difference in kilometres is not large: Salamanca to Valladolid is 120 km, and then you still go up to Villanubla. For the north of the province and for anyone who already has business in the regional capital the sums change, and the province page lists Valladolid as the link with Villanubla and with high-speed rail.

For the west, Ciudad Rodrigo, Vitigudino and the border, a third option appears that the province page mentions: Porto. The A-62 continues to Fuentes de Oñoro and becomes the Portuguese A-25, and for certain European and transatlantic destinations the Portuguese airport has flights that Barajas does not, or at a better price. It is an international trip the driver accepts with the vehicle's paperwork in order, and it is quoted separately because it is not among the province's published routes; if someone from Vitigudino asks for Barajas, on the other hand, the figure is public: from 362,31 € per car, via Salamanca.

How do you reach Matacán and Barajas from each part of the province?

From the Campo de Salamanca, with the capital, Santa Marta, Carbajosa and Villares, Matacán is a short hop along the Peñaranda road and Barajas a good two hours via Ávila and the Guadarrama. From the Tierra de Peñaranda the way out is the most direct in the province: Peñaranda sits on the A-50 and does not pass through Salamanca, which leaves it closer to Barajas than the capital and a stone's throw from Matacán. From the Sierra de Béjar and Guijuelo the route climbs the A-66 to Salamanca, and the page warns that in winter snow can complicate early departures, so the driver proposes a margin and confirms the day before.

From Ciudad Rodrigo, Ledesma and Vitigudino everything goes through Salamanca: the A-62 from the west, the local road from Ledesma and the Vitigudino road, which the province page describes as slow. These are the districts furthest from Barajas, and first-thing flights mean leaving in the small hours; in return, the driver knows the road and the traveller sleeps. For Alba de Tormes the same applies as for the capital, with a direct exit towards the A-50. In every case the booking carries the terminal and the flight's departure time, and the pickup is worked back from check-in with the road margin; at Barajas, T4 and terminals T1, T2 and T3 have different approaches.

How do you book a transfer to an airport, and what happens on the way back?

You book on the website with the pickup address, the airport and terminal, the date and the flight time, and the price is fixed before you confirm; it is per car and per trip, not per person, and you can ask for an invoice or charge it to a company account. For the return the booking carries the flight number: the driver's app follows the actual arrival, so a delay moves the pickup with no calls, and the driver waits in the terminal's arrivals hall with a name sign. What happens if the flight is cancelled or diverted, and the waiting conditions, are on the help page and in the piece on delayed flights linked below.

Two tips from the province page apply here. The first: from Salamanca to Barajas allow more than two hours on the road, so for an early flight the pickup is usually in the small hours, and it is best to book as soon as you have the ticket, above all at the start and end of the academic year, when thousands of students leave and arrive through Barajas in the same weeks. The second: if there is extra luggage, skis or a wheelchair, say so when booking so the car has the boot space and, if needed, is an adapted vehicle. None of this promises a car at any hour; it promises a fixed price, a sign in arrivals and an invoice.

Frequently asked questions

Does Salamanca have an airport with scheduled flights?

Yes, Salamanca-Matacán, east of the capital, but with a very small, seasonal scheduled offer that changes every year. Check it on the airport's page; for most destinations people fly from Barajas.

How much is Béjar to Barajas with a driver?

The published "from" fare is 292,54 € per car, up the A-66 to Salamanca and on via Ávila. The calculator gives the exact price with the address, date and time, and in winter it is wise to book with a margin for snow in the mountains.

Can I fly from Valladolid instead of Barajas?

If your destination is on its schedule, yes: Villanubla has more flights than Matacán and lies on the way of the A-62. The Salamanca–Valladolid route has its own page with the "from" fare; for the capital it usually pays off only when the destination matches.

What if my flight lands at Barajas late?

The booking carries the flight number and the driver follows the actual arrival in the app: the pickup moves with the delay and they wait for you in arrivals with the sign. Waiting and cancellation conditions are on the help page.
