Peñaranda de Bracamonte is the main town of the east of the province, a flat farming area on the border with Ávila. It lies on the A-50, halfway between Salamanca and Ávila, and is one of the few towns in the province that is closer to Madrid than the capital itself.

The University of Salamanca, the oldest still-operating university in Spain, occupies buildings across the old town and campuses in other parts of the city. Its Spanish courses for foreigners bring students from many countries, who usually arrive and leave through Barajas.

The city of Salamanca and Santa Marta de Tormes, across the river and now almost joined to it, make up the province's urban area. The university, the hospital and the station are here, so it is both the starting point for trips to Madrid and the arrival point from the rest of the province.

• Start and end of the academic year (September and June): At the start and end of the academic year thousands of students arrive and leave, many from abroad, with luggage and flights from Barajas. In those weeks it is best to book the airport transfer well ahead.

Tip: From Salamanca to Barajas allow more than two hours on the road: for an early flight, pickup is usually in the small hours.
