Madrid from Salamanca: IFEMA, Parque Warner, concerts and matches, the Estación Sur and hospital appointments, by train to Chamartín, coach, your own car along the A-50 and AP-6 or a car with a driver

From Salamanca there is a direct train to Madrid-Chamartín, scheduled coaches into the capital and two road routes: the A-50 to Ávila and the AP-6 through the Guadarrama tunnel, or the A-62 to Tordesillas and the A-6. A car with a driver to IFEMA costs from 267,64 € per car, with about 160 min on the road; to the Estación Sur, from 265,97 €. For Parque Warner, the stadiums and the Madrid hospitals, each destination page works out the price from every town in the province. The train suits someone travelling alone and returning in daylight; the car suits those with material, children, an appointment with waiting time or a return in the small hours.

Which route suits best from Salamanca depending on the Madrid destination?

Salamanca station, close to the centre, has direct trains to Chamartín, in the north of Madrid. From there IFEMA is on metro line 8 and needs at least one change; the Estación Sur, at Méndez Álvaro, is reached by Cercanías through the central tunnel; the big hospitals each need their own combination. Parque Warner, in San Martín de la Vega to the south-east, calls for train, Cercanías and an interurban bus. For a student with a backpack or a professional going to a meeting near the Castellana, the train is comfortable. Someone leaving from Béjar, Ciudad Rodrigo or Vitigudino first adds the trip to the station: from Béjar, the car to Salamanca station costs from 103,48 €, and the first trains do not wait.

By road, the usual route is the A-50 through Peñaranda de Bracamonte to Ávila, the AP-51 to Villacastín and the AP-6, which crosses the mountains through the toll tunnel; the alternative without motorway tolls is to go up the A-62 to Tordesillas and down the A-6 over the Alto del León. As far as the edge of Madrid the drive is calm; the complicated part comes inside. Madrid has low-emission zones restricting traffic according to the car's environmental label, with rules the City Council publishes and amends on its website, and they are worth checking before driving in. Then come IFEMA parking during fairs, hospital car parks in the morning and stadium exits. With a driver, the car drops you at the door and collects you wherever agreed.

How does an exhibiting company from Salamanca, Guijuelo or Béjar get to IFEMA?

Guijuelo's meat companies, producers from the sierra and firms from the city attend IFEMA's food, tourism or technology fairs with samples, catalogues and display stands, some with chilled products in cool boxes. None of that travels well by train and metro. On build-up day you enter through the exhibitor gate at the time each fair's organisers set, and a car with a large boot, or two coordinated ones, collects from the warehouse and drops the material next to the hall. From Salamanca it is 221 km, and from Guijuelo, which goes up the A-66 before joining the A-50, the transfer starts at 270,41 €. With a business account, the fair's transfers come on a single invoice with the breakdown.

The trade visitor who goes to see the fair and comes back the same day can take the train to Chamartín and continue by metro, if the return time fits the venue's closing. When the day ends with a dinner with clients, or the team sets off from Peñaranda, Alba de Tormes or Ciudad Rodrigo, the car takes over: it collects from each home in turn, drops everyone at the hall door and returns at closing. If a colleague arrives by plane, Barajas is next to the venue and their terminal pickup chains with the arrival at the fair within the same team booking. For multi-day fairs, the same time is set each morning, or the outward trip is booked for the first day and the return for the last, with nights in Madrid.

How do you organise Parque Warner with children from Salamanca?

Parque Warner is in San Martín de la Vega, south-east of Madrid, and from Salamanca you have to cross the mountains and skirt the capital on the M-40 or the M-50 down to the south. By public transport the day starts very early and chains train, Cercanías and interurban bus with the children in tow, so nearly every family in the province goes by car. A transfer with a driver collects you at home, whether in the city, Santa Marta de Tormes, Villares de la Reina or Carbajosa de la Sagrada, and drops you at the park entrance. Child seats are requested when booking with each child's age and weight, and if you bring a pushchair or the group is large a people carrier is assigned. The park's page works out the price from each town.

The difficult part comes at the end. In season the park closes late and everyone leaves together; the driver faces the car-park queue, the M-50, the mountains and the A-50 at night, with the children asleep and after a whole day on foot. With a driver, the pickup time is set when booking, adjusted by message if the final show is delayed, and the family travels back together with nobody having to stay awake at the wheel. For two families or a group of cousins, a single large vehicle at a fixed per-car price usually works out more sensibly than two cars, two parking fees and two tolls. On spring weekends and at Christmas it pays to book early, because the whole park asks for its return in the same short window.

How do you get back to Salamanca from a night concert or match in Madrid?

Stadium concerts and night matches end when there is no train or coach left to Salamanca, which leaves three possibilities: sleep in Madrid, drive the AP-6 and the A-50 in the small hours after hours on your feet, or book the return with a driver. The first adds a hotel and half a day; the second asks someone tired to make a long trip, in winter with fog on the plateau or ice in the mountains. For a group of students or friends, the per-car price shared among everyone makes a booked return reasonable, and nobody has to give up the night to drive. Central Madrid is 214 km from Salamanca, about 156 min in daytime with no incidents, and in the small hours the road is emptier.

What decides whether it all goes well is where the group is collected. When a big event ends, the police close the venue's access roads and the door lies inside the cordon: no car reaches it. When booking you agree a specific junction a few streets beyond the traffic closure, on the side of the way out towards the A-6, and the group walks to it. If there is extra time or the concert runs long, the time is changed by message. The Madrid events page explains how that point is chosen at each venue and works out the price from each town in the province. Many groups from Salamanca go in the afternoon by train, which leaves them near the centre, and book only the return by car.

When is the Estación Sur useful to someone travelling from Salamanca?

The Estación Sur coach station is at Méndez Álvaro, next to metro line 6 and a Cercanías station, and it is the hub for long-distance coaches to the south and east. Scheduled coaches between Salamanca and Madrid arrive at whichever terminal each operating company sets, and it is worth confirming it on the ticket. For Salamanca, the Estación Sur has a clear public: university students going home by coach from Madrid, many with large suitcases at the start and end of the academic year, and anyone connecting there with a line to another province. Also older people who prefer a direct coach to combining train, metro and escalators with luggage.

A direct transfer to Méndez Álvaro makes sense when the connecting coach leaves early and no train arrives with a margin, when there is a lot of luggage or when the traveller has difficulty getting about. From Salamanca it is about 156 min to the bus bay, and from Peñaranda de Bracamonte, the main town closest to Madrid because it joins the A-50 directly, the price starts at 218,84 €. In the other direction, someone arriving at the Estación Sur from the south and carrying on to the province can find the driver with a name sign. The waiting included if the coach is late and what happens next are in the terms of service, which are read before booking.

How do you approach an appointment at a Madrid hospital from Salamanca?

Salamanca University Hospital Complex is the reference hospital for the whole province and for some specialities for neighbouring provinces, so few appointments leave it. When they do, it is usually through a referral to a reference centre, service or unit of the National Health System, designated by the Ministry of Health for complex or uncommon conditions, for a second opinion or for a private insurer's specialist. The big Madrid hospitals are spread out: the Fundación Jiménez Díaz in Moncloa, where the A-6 comes in; La Paz and Ramón y Cajal in the north; Gregorio Marañón by the Retiro; and Doce de Octubre in the south. The Madrid hospitals page works out the price from each town in the province.

From Ciudad Rodrigo, central Madrid is 301 km away, and an early appointment means leaving in the dark. It is booked as a return trip with waiting: pickup at home, drop-off at the door of the outpatient building, waiting while the appointment or test lasts and the trip back, with a companion if you wish and with an adapted vehicle if the person uses a wheelchair. It can be booked in the patient's name, with their phone number, even if a son or daughter in another city pays. It is not medical transport or an ambulance: it is for someone who can travel seated and needs no care. If the doctor has prescribed medical transport, the health service arranges it. For the insurer, the invoice carries the details requested.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a car with a driver from Salamanca to IFEMA?

The published 'from' fare is 267,64 € per car, not per person. The calculator gives the exact amount with your address, date and time, and it is fixed before you book.

Do you go via the AP-6 or the A-62 and A-6?

It depends on traffic and weather, and you can state your preference when booking. How the AP-6 toll is handled is explained on the help page; it is worth reading beforehand rather than assuming.

Can I book the hospital transfer for my father even if I live elsewhere?

Yes. It is booked in his name, with his phone number and the exact hospital address, and the driver contacts him directly. Payment and the invoice can be in your name.

Can you collect me after a concert that finishes in the small hours?

Yes, if the return is booked in advance. A point a few streets from the venue, outside the traffic closure, is agreed, and if the concert runs late you change the time by message.

Can five of us fit with two pushchairs for Parque Warner?

In a people carrier, yes. When booking, give the number of passengers, the children's ages and the pushchairs, and a vehicle with enough room is assigned; the price is fixed before you confirm.

Train and coach timetables and terminals belong to Renfe and the operating companies; venue times to each organiser, and the low-emission zone rules to Madrid City Council. They change: check before travelling. Distances and times are those of the route engine in daytime with no incidents; tolls and road conditions are as published by their operators and the DGT.
