Leaving from Tierra de Alba

Alba de Tormes, on the banks of the Tormes south-east of the capital, is known for holding the tomb of Saint Teresa of Ávila in the Carmelite convent, which draws pilgrims and visitors all year round. Its residents rely on Salamanca for the hospital, the station and most errands.

Which way it goes

Salamanca is a large province with its population concentrated in the capital, and the roads fan out from it: the A-62 to Ciudad Rodrigo, the A-66 to Guijuelo and Béjar, the A-50 to Peñaranda. There is hardly any direct transport between the market towns, so the most common internal trips are from the villages into Salamanca: hospital, station, university and errands.

Matacán airport lies east of the city, in Villagonzalo de Tormes, and shares facilities with an air base. It has very few scheduled flights, and these vary by season, so it is worth checking the flight; for most destinations people fly from Barajas.

Tip: From Salamanca to Barajas allow more than two hours on the road: for an early flight, pickup is usually in the small hours.
