La Covatilla is the ski resort of the Sierra de Béjar, in the south of the province, reached by a mountain road from Béjar. Its season depends on each winter's snowfall, and after snow chains may be needed on the final stretch.

Béjar, at the southern tip of the province and already in the mountains, was a textile town and is now also the gateway to La Covatilla ski resort. It is far from the capital, so Salamanca's hospital, the railway station or the airport always mean a long trip.

When demand peaks

• Ski season (winter, depending on snow): When La Covatilla opens, skiers from Salamanca, Madrid and Extremadura head up to Béjar at weekends. The access road may require chains, so it is worth checking the resort's status before setting off.

Tip: From Salamanca to Barajas allow more than two hours on the road: for an early flight, pickup is usually in the small hours.
