Béjar, at the southern tip of the province and already in the mountains, was a textile town and is now also the gateway to La Covatilla ski resort. It is far from the capital, so Salamanca's hospital, the railway station or the airport always mean a long trip.

Which way it goes

The A-62 continues north-east through Tordesillas to Valladolid and west to the Portuguese border; the A-66, the Silver Route, goes north to Zamora and south through Béjar towards Plasencia and Cáceres; the A-50 leads to Ávila. There is no direct motorway to Segovia, so the route goes via Ávila.

There is no direct motorway between Salamanca and Segovia: the route is the A-50 to Ávila and on from there to Segovia. Public transport needs a connection, so going by car saves the change.

The city of Segovia holds the hospital, the high-speed station, the provincial offices and an old town of narrow streets perched above the Eresma and Clamores rivers. It generates both departures of residents towards Barajas and Madrid and arrivals of visitors who come for the day between the aqueduct and the Alcázar.

Tip: If you arrive at the university with several suitcases at the start of the year, say so when booking so the car has enough boot space.
