There is hardly any direct transport between the market towns, so the most common internal trips are from the villages into Salamanca: hospital, station, university and errands.

Salamanca railway station, close to the centre, has direct trains to Madrid-Chamartín and connections with Valladolid and Ávila. For anyone coming from Béjar, Ciudad Rodrigo or Peñaranda, a car to the station is usually the only way to catch the first trains.

On arrival: Campo de Salamanca

The city of Salamanca and Santa Marta de Tormes, across the river and now almost joined to it, make up the province's urban area. The university, the hospital and the station are here, so it is both the starting point for trips to Madrid and the arrival point from the rest of the province.

When demand peaks

• Start and end of the academic year (September and June): At the start and end of the academic year thousands of students arrive and leave, many from abroad, with luggage and flights from Barajas. In those weeks it is best to book the airport transfer well ahead.

Tip: If you are staying in Salamanca's old town, give the exact address: traffic is restricted and the driver stops at the nearest access point.
